| biography:
| Navigator, and circumnavigator of the globe, born near Ipswich, Suffolk, E England, UK. He shared in Sir Richard Grenville's expedition to Virginia (1585). In 1586 he sailed with three ships for the Pacific, returning by the Cape of Good Hope to England in 1588, and was knighted. A second expedition (1591) ended in disaster, and he died off Ascension. |
