| Writer and physician, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, then travelled in Ireland, France, and Italy, and settled in Norwich (1637). His greatest work is his earliest, the Religio medici, written about 1635 - a confession of faith, revealing a deep insight into the mysteries of the spiritual life. His other works include Pseudodoxia epidemica (1646), Hydriotaphia; Urn Burial (1658), and the Garden of Cyrus (1658). Writing during what has been called the Golden Age of the English language, he is particularly noted for the beauty of his sonorous prose. He was knighted in 1671. |
