| biography:
| Australian field marshal, born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, SE Australia. He joined the regular army in 1906, attended Staff College at Quetta, and became chief-of-staff of the Australian Corps in 1918. At the outbreak of World War 2 he was given command of the Australian Imperial Forces in the Middle East. On the establishment of the SW Pacific Command he led Allied land forces in Australia (1942), and received the Japanese surrender in 1945. |
