| biography:
| Furniture designer, born in London, UK. In 1923 he started a furniture-making business in Hereford and Worcester, in the Cotswold Arts and Crafts tradition. With his brother Dick (1903–81), Gordon Russell Ltd went on to produce some of the finest modern furniture of the 1930s. In World War 2 he was chairman of the panel responsible for ‘Utility’ furniture (1943–7), and was director of the Council of Industrial Design (the Design Council) during its formative years (1947–59). He was elected a royal designer for industry in 1940. |
