| Aircraft designer, born in Windsor, S England, UK. He joined Hawker Engineering Company (later Hawker Siddeley Aviation) in 1923, and became their chief designer. He had a unique design record of highly successful single-engined military aircraft, notably the Fury, Hart, and Demon biplanes, and his first monoplane, the Hurricane. He also designed the piston-engined Tornado, Typhoon, and Tempest; the jet-engined Sea Hawk and Hunter; and the jump-jet Harrier. |
