| Poet, born in Wellington, New Zealand, the son of Sydney Alfred Smith. He moved to Edinburgh in 1928 when his father was appointed a professor there. He studied at Edinburgh and Oxford universities, and established a record as one of the best modern Lallans poets with such works as Skail Wind (1941), Under the Eildon Tree (1948), and So Late into the Night (1952). He also wrote a comic novel, Carotid Cornucopius (1947). |
