| Motor-racing driver, born in London, UK. He won many major races in the 1950s, including the British Grand Prix (twice), the Mille Miglia, and the Targa Florio. He never won a world title, though he was runner-up to Fangio (1955–7) and to Mike Hawthorn (1958). He won 16 races from 66 starts (1951–61). A bad crash at Goodwood in 1962 ended his career. He then became a journalist and broadcaster, returning to saloon car racing in 1980. He was knighted in 1999. |
