| Historian, born in Maldon, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne University, London, and Paris, then joined Melbourne University, and wrote his first book, History of Australian Land Settlement (1923). In 1929 he became professor of history at Sydney. His History of Modern Europe (1933), The Problems of Modern France (1937), and The House that Hitler Built (1937) brought him wider attention, and he became a radio and newspaper commentator during World War 2. In 1947 he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Sydney University, and principal from 1955. |
