| biography:
| Artist, born in Cookham, Windsor and Maidenhead, S England, UK. He studied in London, then lived and worked mainly at Cookham. During 1926–33 he executed murals (using his war experiences) in the Oratory of All Souls, Burghclere. He produced many purely realistic landscapes, but his main works interpret the Bible in terms of everyday life, such as ‘Resurrection: Port Glasgow’ (1950, Tate, London). He was knighted in 1959. |
