| Footballer, born in Hanley, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He started his sporting career with Stoke City in 1931, before a controversial transfer to Blackpool in 1947. Medals eluded him until 1953, when he played a significant role in the Football Association Cup Final. He returned to Stoke in 1961, and continued to play First Division football until after he was 50. He played for England 54 times, was twice Footballer of the Year (1948, 1963), and was the inaugural winner of the European Footballer of the Year Award in 1956. He later managed Port Vale, and was knighted in 1965. |
