| Conductor, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, won the Bournemouth International Conducting Competition at the age of 17, and made his London debut at both the Royal Albert and Festival Halls in 1976. He was assistant conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1977–80), then joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as principal conductor (1980), becoming music director there (1990–8), and has been principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1981. He joined the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra as chief conductor and artistic director in 2002. He was knighted in 1994. |
