| Judge, born in Merthyr Tydfil, S Wales, UK. He emigrated to Australia in 1854 and studied at Sydney University. From 1867 he practised law in Queensland, and became prime minister of that state three times. He was chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the National Australian Convention in 1891, and had a major role in drafting the Australian Commonwealth Constitution. Chief Justice of Queensland (1893–1903), he was first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia (1903–19). |
