| biography:
| Opera administrator, born in Vienna, Austria. He worked in Berlin and Darmstadt (1928–33) before managing the opera at Glyndebourne (1935–49). He was co-founder and director (1947–9) of the Edinburgh Festival, and general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City (1950–72). He took British nationality in 1946, and was knighted in 1971. |
