| Rhodesian statesman, born in Harare (formerly Salisbury), Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia). A railway worker and trade unionist, he was elected to the Legislative Council of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1938, knighted in 1953, and from 1956 to its break-up in 1963 was prime minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Malawi). His handling of the constitutional crisis in 1959 aroused much controversy. |
