| Botanist and geneticist, born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and became the first professor of agricultural botany there (1908). Using Mendelian genetic principles, he pioneered the breeding of hybrid rust-resistant strains of wheat. Appointed the first director of the Cambridge Plant Breeding Institute in 1912, he was largely responsible for the foundation of the modern science of plant breeding. |
