| biography:
| Statistician and geneticist, born in East Finchley, N Greater London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and became statistician at the Rothamsted agricultural research institute (1919). There he developed his techniques for the design and analysis of experiments where it is not possible to control every element that could affect the outcome. His analysis of variance has become standard practice in medical, biological, and agricultural research. He also worked on genetics and evolution, and studied the genetics of human blood groups, elucidating the Rhesus factor. His book, The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection (1929), was a landmark in renewed interest in the study of evolutionary genetics. He became professor of eugenics at University College London (1933–43), and of genetics at Cambridge (1943–57). He was knighted in 1952, and after his retirement in 1957 he moved to Australia. |
