| Australian scientist. He studied at Sydney University, taught mathematics at Harvard (1959–61), physics at Sydney (1962–73), and was professor of biology and zoology at Princeton (1973–88), before moving to Oxford. He is one of a growing number of scientists who have contributed to chaos theory, his work having applications in ecology and public health. Since 1995 he has been chief scientific adviser to the government. He was knighted in 1996. |
