| Politician, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Oxford, and in 1924 was elected Conservative MP for East Aberdeenshire, the seat he held until 1958. He was parliamentary private secretary to Winston Churchill (1926–9), and parliamentary secretary to the ministry of food (1940–1). He became an original member of the Council of United Europe (1948) and was a British delegate to its consultative assembly (1949–54). Well-known as a commentator on public affairs on radio and TV, he was raised to the peerage in 1958. |
