| biography:
| New Zealand statesman and prime minister (1975–84), born in Auckland, New Zealand. He served as an infantryman in World War 2 before becoming an accountant and president of the New Zealand Institute of Cost Accountants. He was first elected to parliament (as a National Party MP) in 1960, and after five years as minister of finance became deputy prime minister. From 1974 he was Party leader and Leader of the Opposition, and led the National Party to victory in the 1975 elections. After serving as prime minister, he gave up leadership of the National Party, but remained an MP until 1991, and served as shadow foreign affairs spokesman. He was knighted in 1984. |
