| Metallurgist and industrialist, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. The son of a Sheffield steel manufacturer who was a pioneer of steel casting, he was educated locally, taking an interest in science. After taking over the business from his father, he continued to research alloys of steel, and developed manganese steel, an alloy of exceptional durability with many applications in industry. He was knighted in 1908. |
