| Film director, born in South Shields, NE England, UK. He graduated from set designing to directing episodes of television series, such as Z Cars, and also commercials, before making his first feature film The Duellists (1977). Later films include Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), and he received an Oscar nomination for Thelma and Louise (1991). He acted as both producer and director for White Squall (1996) and G.I. Jane (1997), and directed Gladiator (2000, Golden Globe, BAFTA), and Hannibal (2001). He received a knighthood in 2002. |
