| biography:
| Art collector and philanthropist, born in London, UK, the illegitimate son of Viscount Beauchamp and Agnes Jackson, née Wallace. Educated in Paris, he helped his father (then 4th Marquess of Hertford) build up the large collection of paintings and objets d'art, bequeathed by his widow to the nation in 1897. These now comprise the Wallace Collection, housed in Hertford House, London, once his residence. During the siege of Paris (1870–1) he equipped ambulances and founded a British hospital there, for which service he was created a baronet in 1871. |
