| biography:
| Composer, born in Broadstairs, Kent, SE England, UK. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and in Paris under Pierre Boulez. Well known for his music for films, he has also composed operas, orchestral works, chamber music, and experimental works for one and two pianos. Some of his music uses the 12-tone scale, and his interest in jazz has prompted such works as Jazz Calendar (1963) and Jazz Pastoral (1969). His more recent work shows a growing emphasis on internal rhythmic structure. Among his other works are the two operas commissioned by Sadler's Wells, The Mines of Sulphur (1965) and A Penny for a Song (1968), the opera commissioned by Covent Garden, Victory (1970), and the choral work, Spells (1975). His work Rondel (for large jazz ensemble) was premiered in 1999. He was appointed Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in 1995, and was knighted in 1998. |
