| Geologist and civil engineer, born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied civil engineering in London and Edinburgh, returned to Ireland in 1808, and became mining engineer to the Royal Dublin Society in 1812 and a government inspector of mines. He published a geological map of Ireland in 1835. As commissioner of valuations after the Irish Valuation Act of 1827 he created Griffith's valuations for country rate assessments, and was consulted in all major Irish building projects, including the National Gallery and the Museum of Natural History, Dublin. |
