| biography:
| Soldier, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. He ran away from school to join the British army, and was commissioned in the 13th Foot (later Somerset Light Infantry) in 1800. He took part in the Greek War of Independence (1821–32), and was appointed generalissimo of the Greek insurgent forces (1827). He led the revolution in Greece in 1843, and was promoted general (1854), having earned the nickname of ‘Liberator of Greece’. He was knighted in 1822. |
