| biography:
| Rhodesian missionary, statesman, and prime minister (1953–8), born in Otago, New Zealand. A Church of Christ minister, he went to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where he was superintendent of the Dadaya Mission (1934–53). He became an MP (1948), and rose to become prime minister. He was later detained by the Smith regime for supporting the Zimbabwe nationalist movement (1972–6). He was knighted in 1986. |
