| biography:
| British soldier, born in Crediton, Devon, SW England, UK. He saw active service in the war with China (1860), the Red River expedition (1870), the Ashanti War (1874), the Kaffir War (1878), and the Zulu War (1879), where his rescue of fellow-soldiers in action at Inhlobane won him the VC. He was chief-of-staff in the 1st Boer War (1881), and was commander-in-chief in the 2nd Boer War (1899–1900), when he raised the siege of Ladysmith (1900). |
