| Social anthropologist, born in Auckland, New Zealand. He studied there and under Bronislaw Malinowski at the London School of Economics, and carried out fieldwork (1928–9) on the island of Tikopia in the Solomon Is. He spent two years at Sydney University before returning to the London School of Economics (1932–68), becoming professor of anthropology in 1944. His major contributions have been in the fields of economic anthropology, social change, and anthropological theory, especially social organization. He was knighted in 1973. |
