| biography:
| Physician, born in Port Elizabeth, S South Africa. He served with South African armed forces in World War 2, qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town, and taught in the Medical School. In 1967 he was ‘banned’ by the South African government, and the next year moved to Britain, where he became professor of medicine at Birmingham University (1972–85) and president of Wolfson College, Oxford (1985–93). He has written extensively on endocrinology and metabolism, and has been president of several organizations, including the Mental Health Foundation (1989– ). He was knighted in 1984. |
