| Medical administrator, born in Jamestown, South Australia. He studied at Adelaide University, became director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine at Townsville, Queensland, from 1922, director of public health and quarantine in New Guinea (1924–8), and director-general of health and medical services for Queensland (1934–45). Knighted in 1935, after World War 2 he served in Germany and New York, and worked with the UN (1946–51). |
