| Civil engineer, born in London, UK. He studied at the City and Guilds of London Institute, and joined (1901) the firm of consulting engineers which in 1938 became Freeman, Fox & Partners, specializing in the design of steel bridges. His first notable design was for Sydney Harbour Bridge, a construction of 500 m/1670 ft span (1932). He was later involved with his partner Sir Gilbert Roberts in the design of the long-span suspension bridges over the estuaries of the Forth, Severn, and Humber rivers, though he did not live to see any of them built. |
