| Theatre, opera, and film director, born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, E England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, where he produced and acted in more than 20 plays. After working in repertory and for the Arts Council, he became artistic director of the Elizabethan Theatre Company (1953), director (1955–6) of the London Arts Theatre, and formed his own company, The International Playwrights' Theatre (1957). After several productions at Stratford, he became director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and remained as managing director of the company's theatres in Stratford and London until 1968. He was also director of the Covent Garden Opera (1969–71), and became successor to Olivier as director of the National Theatre (1973–88). He formed his own production company in 1988, and became artistic director at the Old Vic in 1997. Later productions include An Ideal Husband (1996), Amadeus (1998), and Lenny (1999). He was knighted in 1977. |
