| biography:
| Zoologist and journalist, born in Dunfermline, Fife, E Scotland, UK. He started his career as a lecturer at Oxford and London, and in 1903 was elected secretary of the Zoological Society. He inaugurated a period of prosperity at the London Zoo, and was responsible for the Mappin terraces, Whipsnade, the Aquarium, and other improvements. He wrote a number of books on zoological subjects, including The Nature of Man (1904) and Materialism and Vitalism in Biology (1930). |
