| British naval commander and gunnery expert, born in London, UK. He entered the Royal Navy in 1866 and saw active service in Ashanti (Ghana), Egypt, South Africa, and China. Retiring in 1909, he returned to active service as gunnery adviser to the fleet, and commanded the anti-aircraft defences of London (1915–18). He foresaw the importance of air power at sea, and his methods and inventions transformed naval gunnery. |
