| biography:
| Clergyman, born in Wellington, New Zealand. He studied at the universities of Victoria (Wellington) and Oxford, was ordained an Anglican priest in 1958, and became Bishop of Waiapu (1971–9). He was subsequently Bishop of Auckland (1979–85) and Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand (1980–5) before becoming Governor-General of New Zealand (1985–90), the first Maori to hold any of those positions. He then became the Anglican Consultative Council representative to the UN (1991–3). He was knighted in 1985. |
