| biography:
| British amateur astronomer, writer, broadcaster, and musician. He was educated at home due to childhood illness. He is best known as the enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter of the long-running BBC television programme The Sky at Night (1957– ). He is an accomplished xylophone player, and has composed several works, including Perseus and Andromeda (1975). The recipient of many awards for his services to astronomy, he has published over 60 books, including The Amateur Astronomer (1970), The A–Z of Astronomy (1986), Mission to the Planets (1990), and Teach Yourself Astronomy (1995). He received a knighthood in 2001 and became an Honorary fellow of the Royal Society in the same year. |
