| Civil engineer, born of Danish parents in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. He studied philosophy and engineering in Denmark before moving to London in 1923. He became increasingly concerned with the solution of structural problems in Modernist architecture, and was responsible for the structural design of Coventry Cathedral and St Catherine's College, Oxford. He later evolved the structural design which permitted the realization of the Sydney Opera House (1956–73). |
