| biography:
| British soldier. He won the DSO in World War 1, and in 1939 became deputy chief-of-staff of the British Expeditionary Force in France. In 1942 he was promoted lieutenant-general, commanded an army corps from El Alamein to Sicily, where he succeeded Montgomery as commander of the Eighth Army, and in November 1944 commanded an army group in Burma. He was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower of London in 1954. |
