| Physicist, born in Penkhull, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He studied at the Royal College of Science and at University College London, and in 1881 became professor of physics at Liverpool. In 1900 he was appointed first principal of the new university at Birmingham. A pioneer of radio-telegraphy, his early experiments showed that radio-frequency waves could be transmitted along electric wires (1888). In 1894 he hypothesised that the Sun emitted radio waves (not proved until 1942). The author of c.140 books, he was one of the leading scholars of his day, also known for his efforts in reconciling the ideas of science, religion, and the paranormal. He was knighted in 1910. |
