| Comedian, born in London, UK. He made his stage debut in 1946, and appeared in variety, concert parties, and summer seasons throughout Britain as an inadequate but well-meaning character in ill-fitting clothes. He made his film debut as a slapstick comedian in Trouble in Store (1953), followed by a string of successes including Man of the Moment (1955), There Was a Crooked Man (1960), and What's Good for the Goose (1969). He received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Comedy (British Comedy Awards) in 1991. A volume of autobiography, Don't Laugh at Me appeared in 1992. He was knighted in 1999. |
