biography: Sanskrit scholar, born in Mumbai (Bombay), W India. He studied at London and Oxford universities, became professor of Sanskrit at Haileybury (1844–58), master at Cheltenham (1858–60), and professor of Sanskrit at Oxford (1860). He was knighted in 1886 at the opening of the Indian Institute, which was established mainly through his energy, and completed in 1896. His books include Sanskrit grammars and dictionaries, editions of Sanskrit texts, and books on India.
