| biography:
| Poet and philosopher, born in Sialkot, NE Pakistan. He studied at Lahore, Cambridge (where he read law and philosophy), and Munich. On his return to India, he achieved fame through his poetry, whose compelling mysticism and nationalism caused him to be regarded almost as a prophet by Muslims. His efforts to establish a separate Muslim state eventually led to the formation of Pakistan. He was knighted in 1923. |
