| biography:
| Mathematician, born in London, UK. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge (1952), lectured at Cambridge and Oxford, became professor of mathematics at Oxford (1963–9), and was appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1990. He has worked on algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, index theory of differential operators, and the mathematics of quantum field theory, where he has been particularly concerned with bridging the gap between mathematicians and physicists. In 1966 he was awarded the Fields Medal. |
