| biography:
| Film producer, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He entered the film industry in 1921, and founded Gainsborough Pictures in 1928. In 1931 he took charge of production at Gaumont–British Pictures, where he made The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935). After a brief period working for MGM in Hollywood, he became executive producer for Ealing Films (1938–59), and is remembered for a string of successful comedies and thrillers, including Whisky Galore (1948), The Blue Lamp (1949), and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951). He was knighted in 1948. |
