| Engineer and inventor, born in Hacqueville, NW France. He fled from the French Revolution in 1793, going first to the USA, where he was architect and chief engineer in New York. He settled in England in 1799, constructed many public works, and solved many of the problems of underwater tunnelling. His main achievement was the 460 m/503 yd Thames Tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping (1825–43). He was knighted in 1841. |
