| biography:
| British Conservative statesman, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh, was called to the bar in 1970, and was elected an MP in 1974. After a ministerial post in the Foreign and Commonwealth office (1983–6), he became secretary of state for Scotland (1986–90), transport (1990–2), defence (1992–5), and foreign secretary (1995–7). He lost his seat in the 1997 general election, the year he received a knighthood. |
