| biography:
| Bahamian prime minister (1973–92), born in the Bahamas. He studied at London University, and practised as a lawyer before becoming centrally involved in politics, eventually as leader of the Progressive Liberal Party. He became prime minister in 1969, and led his country to full independence within the Commonwealth in 1973. He was re-elected in 1977, 1982, and 1987. When his Party was soundly defeated in the 1992 election, he resigned as leader. |
