| Broadcaster and writer, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Oxford, and served in the navy in World War 2, before becoming a librarian, lecturer, and later editor of the BBC's First Reading (1953–4). On television, he introduced Profile (1955–6), was an ITN newscaster (1956–8), hosted This Week (1958–60), and contributed to the BBC's Panorama (1960–3). He contested the Rochdale by-election as a Liberal in 1958 and the general election of 1959. He has devoted himself to defending victims of alleged injustice. His many notable series include Your Verdict (1962), Your Witness (1967–70), and A Life With Crime (1979). He has also acted as host on Face the Press (1968–72), Tonight (1976–8), and Did You See? (1980–8), among many others. His books include Ten Rillington Place (1961) and The Trial of Stephen Ward (1964). He published an autobiography, On My Way to the Club, in 1989. He was knighted in 1994. |
