| biography:
| Historian, born near Warsaw, Poland. He moved to England in 1906, studied at Oxford, and took British nationality. He became professor of modern history at Manchester (1931–52), creating a school of history in which the emphasis was on the detailed analysis of events and institutions, particularly parliamentary elections, so as to reveal the motivation of the individuals involved in them. One of his most important works is The Structure of Politics at the Accession of George II (1929). |
