| biography:
| Australian military commander, born in Ballarat, Victoria, SE Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in 1914, commanded a company at Gallipoli, and later a batallion on the Western Front. In World War 2 he commanded the 18th Brigade in the Middle East, and led the 9th Division at Tobruk during the siege of 1941 and at the Battles of El Alamein. He returned to Australia to lead the New Guinea Force, taking command of the First Australian Corps. He ended the war in 1945 as commander of the Australian and USA task force in Borneo. |
